Nickel might be a water elemental dragon, but even he has limits—and the sudden rain storms, hail, and snow in mid-summer are way over the line. Luckily, he works for Dane's Supernatural Consulting firm and can use those resources to figure out who keeps mucking with the weather and get them to stop.

It doesn't take long for Nickel to realize he isn't the only one searching for the weather worker the enemy he has been hunting for ten years has finally reappeared, and it's a race to see which of them will reach the weather worker first. Nickel isn't certain he'll win, or even survive, the attempt, but he'll do whatever it takes to save the dragons.

The pacing is getting better but the shortness of this still rushes the conflict. But it’s done much better than the first books and that’s a welcome change.
Only thing that keeps throwing me for a loop is the ages. Whether I’m misremembering ages or there’s inconsistencies within the text it’s all done in a way that makes me feel like I’m trapped in a math problem because the time skips and stated ages don’t match up to what I remember having read in the previous books.
At minimum this could have been fixed with having epilogues (or short prologue?) to fill in moments between these huge time skips the writer is using. Even something like offhandedly mentioning a birthday celebration or how many times they’ve celebrated some yearly event might cement it better; If I’m just misremembering.
Overall a great continuation there was a bit of an info dump to catch Platinum up to speed but, still not bad.

Firstly, don’t try to read this book as a standalone. It’s number four in the series and should totally be read as such. If you read it as a standalone, you’d probably enjoy the author’s well written words, but you’re not going to care much about the characters. It’s going to seem like more of a snippet from a longer story than anything else. But for those of us who squeal with joy each time we see one of these distinctive covers appear on Less Than Three’s coming soon list, this story is something that has been much anticipated. The dragon kits that we were introduced to way back in the first book of the series are finally growing up. Nickel, that blue haired stubborn little soldier, is now eighteen, and Mell Eight has gifted us with a story from his perspective.

This story does two important things. It ties up a loose end from the earlier books – the missing air dragon who remained in the clutches of the evil scientists – and at the same time that air dragon, aka Platinum, is set up the be the future love interest of Nickel. Well, I assume he will be. As it is the author managed to write this whole story without the two main characters actually meeting. And I guess that’s a great indication of Mell Eight’s skill. Usually if I read what I assumed would be a romance and there’s nary a kiss in sight, I’d be pretty critical of the whole thing. But I was completely sold on this story, and the anticipation of what could be was more than enough to keep me happy.

As always we have plenty of magic and get to visit with the whole dragon family. It continues the battle of good vs. evil and we learn that Lumie (secretly everyone’s favourite, I’m sure) may be even more special than we first thought.

Like I said, you aren’t going to think much of this if you don’t start right back at the beginning with Dragon Consultant. If you enjoy magical cuteness and well written fantasy, then it really is worth checking out this series.

I love this little series. I always know, whenever I pick one up, I’m in for a short, fun read with some cute dragons and some paranormal craziness usually tied together by Dane’s magic. This one is no different, except for the first time, Nickel takes center stage. If you are new to it all, though, I definitely recommend reading them in order because this one doesn’t spare any time to catch you up on what’s going on.

I liked the change of view point. Nickel has always been the most grown up of the dragonlings, serious and determined to enact revenge on the scientists who imprisoned him. He’s super focused here, but I loved that he could still find time to spend with his younger siblings – not that it pays to ignore either Alloy or Lumie, since you never know quite what they’ll get up to behind your back. I loved seeing those two again, particularly Lumie and his strange magical ways.

This book also returns to the main plot concerning the dragon experiment labs, and one loose thread that was left behind after Dane’s last brush with them. I enjoyed seeing that come full circle.

However, this didn’t feel as complete as the other books usually do. They’re all short, but before they’ve all felt like self-contained moments in these characters’ lives. Not this one. This one is very open ended and feels only half-told. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I did expect a little more resolution.

In all this was a cute continuation that left me even more keen than usual to find out what happens next.

Mell Eight is the go to writer for Dragons.
I enjoy these books, but I wish there was more about Lumie, he's my favorite character.
Great addition to the series. Looking forward the next book in the series!
This story picks up later for dragon consultant. The main character is Nickel and we also meet Platinum. The usual adventure and craziness ensues. Kitnapping and evil scientists contribute to the action. All the dragons from the series are in this story.
